The evaporative emissions control system, commonly called the EVAP system, prevents gasoline vapors from escaping into the atmosphere. Fuel vapors are stored in a charcoal canister and later drawn into the engine, where they are burned during normal combustion.
The purge valve controls when those vapors enter the intake manifold. It should remain closed during certain operating conditions and open only when commanded by the engine computer.
